Indoor light painting set on a tabletop

I learned about indoor light painting a year or so ago and I loved it immediately. There are so many different things you can do with it and you get a different result every time. One of my favorite things about it was that different materials and objects can do many different things with light so you can play around and see what everything does.

To take photos like these, you need to have your camera on a tripod, like you do for all night painting, and you need to have a long exposure. Mine was about 15 seconds. I would press my shutter and then paint parts of my scene that I wanted to show in my photo. If there were parts that I wanted left in darkness I just didn’t shine the light on them. Be careful of leaving a light trail. To stay away from that, make sure your flashlight or light source is never facing the camera.

Happy light painting!
